Compensation Survey: The size of average salary increases in technology companies has risen substantially in 2000 and employees can expect similar levels of potential pay adjustments in 2001, according to the results of the latest survey of total compensation practices in Mid-Atlantic technology companies released by The Jaffe Group, State College, PA. Based on responses from 238 firms, whose median revenue is $5 million and median staff size is 40, employees have been granted an average increase of 6.8% this year and the projected increases for next year are 6.7%. This year's increases are 17% greater than the firms' 1999 adjustment practices and the projected increase for 2001 is 22% higher than was initially projected for 2000. "The salary increases reflect the tight labor market for technology employees and are substantially higher than national survey data reported for typically larger firms," study author Bill Jaffe reported. The 10th annual survey was conducted by The Jaffe Group and co-sponsored by technology councils in New Jersey, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia and Washington, DC. This year's survey, which was conducted on-line, reflects a 69% increase in the number of participants as compared to last year's study. In addition to human resource and compensation practice information, the survey reports salary and incentive rates for 30 benchmark positions, representing 6,400 incumbents.
